Hey, Product Managers! Its time to fall in love with technology

Whenever we talk about the skill set for PMs, we refer to strategy , roadmaps, user experience and all of it is essential, but equally important is the knack for technology. Because technology is what makes the engines roar for your products.

I have worked with a lot of product managers who are brilliant people managers, can create comprehensive roadmaps and know the secret sauce for relentless prioritization but when it comes to technology they fall flat on face.

Technology is not just something that the tech lead should master and provide inputs for estimates when you go into the sprint planning meetings, it is something that you need to be enamored with to ensure you build the right products for your customers.

Some tips for catching up

• Choose the topic — Choose the topic that interests you , the basic philosophy of all technology platforms is same.
• Trainings — With the advent of online trainings, it is easier than ever to acquire new skills, udemy, coursera etc. offer plethora of options.
• Buddy up — If this is the first time or been a long time since you went back to school, it will be great help to coax a fellow PM into learning with you, so you don’t feel overwhelmed and have someone to talk to about the problems.
• Keep at it — It will seem tough at first , but with time it will become easier.

I have benefitted from going back to the roots and learning about the technology (I joined a course in Python and each time I created a working program , I felt happy like a child with a trophy), I am sure it will help you too!
